Cape Town – 27 December 2016:
Another day in South Africa, another murder ... But this time everything is different ... not just because the murder victim was a policeman but because the victim was a good friend of mine.
To report on crime incidents forms part of what I do everyday. It's really sad to see what is happening 24/7 a day but I suppose it's also part of life. On 26 December 2016 I received a Notice to report on a Missing Person, someone I knew very well, one of my friends!
The moment I received the information that Dion was missing a list of possible venues came to mind where he could have been. I knew Dion fairly well.
The first thing I did: I called Dion on his cellphone but the phone just rang.
If the phone had to be switched off, I would have had a reason to worry. Dion oftenly missed calls but would always return a call as soon as possible.
I decided to sent him a sms and asked him to call me. A short while later, I received a message saying that "Dion forgot his phone at home and we are all looking for him."
I called again and Dion's brother answered the phone. It's only after I spoke to his brother, that I realized that something is not right.
I immediately made the Missing Persons post on News, Accidents, Robberies & Incidents Facebook page and groups and Broadcasted across the entire NARI Network.
When Dion left his mothers home to deliver a gift to the family doctor he left his cellphone and wallet at home and he was barefoot and was wearing a PT-shorts.
According to the family doctor, Dion delivered the gift and left there around 16h00. This was on 24 December 2016.
