Reports from the scene indicate that the Mr Hettema was shot during a robbery on the farm. Athlenda Mathe, Netcare 911 media liaison, said that when paramedics arrived on scene they found that Hettema had passed away prior to their arrival due to the gunshot wound he sustained.
Sadly Mr Hettema was declared dead on the scene.
His wife, their domestic worker and her child were tied up and locked in a separate room while the house was ransacked, according to police spokesperson, Captain Maritza van der Merwe.
The house was robbed of one firearm, jewellery, cellphones and a laptop, according to Captain van der Merwe. The two suspects remain at large. This incident happened this morning at about 09h00.
Hettema is known for achievements in cycling and rally driving; most notably representing South Africa in the 1956 Summer Olympic Games, where he competed in three cycling events. Hettema had an almost 40-year career as a rally driver, winning the SA rally five times as well as being the first winner of the Roof of Africa Rally in 1967.
