JOHANNESBURG – A truck speeding between Kuruman and Vryburg on Saturday was chased down by residents when its driver failed to stop at any intersections or robots.
Eyewitness Paul Marais told eNCA.com that the Kuruman Community Policing Forum was alerted to the truck by Vryburg residents and they gave chase.
In the video footage, the truck is seen swerving from one side of the road into oncoming traffic. At one point, it narrowly misses a pedestrian on the side of the road.
"He refused to stop. We did not get any help from the police until we cornered him. Only then did they arrive," said Marias. "The police got him out of the truck and found whisky bottles in his cabin. They took the driver into custody," he said.
Marais said the chase went on for about 45 minutes.
"He bumped one of our bakkies. He was running away. He wouldn’t stop.”
There were no injuries reported. The driver is being held at the Kuruman police station.
