Applying for a Learners Licence

What is a Learner's Licence?

A Learner’s Licence is a permit that proves that you have basic knowledge of a motor vehicle and the rules of the road and allows you to drive when you are supervised by a licensed driver.

Before you are allowed to drive on your own, you need to get your Learner's Licence. It is obtained by passing a written theory test.

How old must I be to apply for a learner's license?

You can get a code 1 learner's license at 16 years old.

You can get a code 2 learner’s license when you’re 17 years or older.

With a code 1 learner's license, you are only allowed to drive a motorcycle up to 125cc at the age of 16 years. At the age of 18, you’re allowed to drive a motorcycle over 125cc with a code 1 learner license.

When you apply to write the test, you will need to take the following to your nearest traffic department:

• Proof of address

• A pen

Important information I need to know

When applying for a learner's license, you will complete the LL1 form, which will be provided by the traffic department.

You need to pay R68 to make an appointment to write the learner's license test.

Once you've submitted your form, you'll be given a date for your test. Remember to take a pen as most traffic departments don't provide any.

Take Note: what is a valid proof of address:

Proof of postal and residential address e.g. utility account. If the utility bill is not in your name, the owner of the bill must make an affidavit declaring that you live at the address and the utility bill must be attached to the affidavit.

If you stay at an informal settlement, you must bring a letter with an official date stamp from the ward councilor confirming your postal and residential address.

May I drive with my learner’s license?

Once you have your learner’s license, you may drive, however, a licensed driver must accompany you at all times, except on a motorcycle.

A learner driver may not carry another person on a motorcycle.
