JOHANNESBURG - A mother is expected to appear in court on Monday, after her toddler was found abandoned in Glenanda Johannesburg on Friday.

The two-year old boy was found near a shopping centre in the South of Johannesburg. His photo was shared on various social media platforms and community Whatsapp groups in an attempt to reunite him with his family.

His mother was found on Saturday and arrested.

Warrant Officer Lorraine van Emmerik said the child has been handed over to the Child Protection Unit within the police for further investigation.

"He was found walking alone near The Glenanda (Village) Shopping Centre on Vorster Avenue at about 6pm. The boy was taken to the Mondeor police station," she said.

Van Emmerik said the woman, who cannot be named because she is yet to be formally charged and because the case involves a minor, will likely appear in court on Monday. However Van Emmerik said details of the time and court room would only become clear early on Monday morning.

According to the Glenvista Community Policing Forum, the toddler spent the night in a place safety with Mondeor CPF patrollers on Friday.

The forum wrote on its Facebook page that the "mother has been arrested and charged with child neglect at Moffat View police station and currently detained."
