Eight people including four children lost their lives in a fire at an orphanage in Durban. Four other people were injured and have been taken to various hospitals. The blaze broke out early on Thursday morning in Newlands, north of the city.
The ages of those killed in the fire range from four to 21 years old. KwaZulu-Natal EMS spokesman Robert McKenzie said that they received a call about the fire at around 2.20am.
"Tragically eight people were killed, among them several children," said McKenzie. "Reports from the scene is that much of the building has been destroyed."
McKenzie said it is unclear what sparked the blaze.
