The family of a mother and a toddler who were put in a holding cell last week met the Table View police station commander and the community policing forum (CPF) yesterday.

The meeting was to discuss the events that led up to the incident involving 20-year-old Jade Benjamin, her sister Tammy-Leigh Booysen and her boyfriend.

The group were in a meter cab with Benjamin’s 2-year-old daughter on their way to the CBD when they were pulled over by the police last week.

Benjamin and her child were put in a police van and kept in the Table View cells for 15 minutes before being released. Booysen posted images of the event on Facebook, receiving over 20 000 shares and up to 500 comments.

Yesterday’s meeting with station commander Dirk Vosloo included the sisters’ mother Amber Booysen.

Table View CPF vice-chairperson Grant Lemos said officials would ask the City to release CCTV footage as the altercation took place close to a camera.

Benjamin’s sister said the family felt more at ease after the meeting. “The commander confirmed that they were investigating the incident after they received word of the post. We submitted our statements and addressed other concerns.”

Online threats received and the officer seen driving past their apartment were recorded, she said and the commander encouraged them to lay charges if they received further threats.

“We also asked that the officers be removed from patrolling our area as we feel uneasy with their presence.”

Their mother said: “The CPF said that there is a camera near the scene of the incident and the footage could be requested. There was mention of a witness who the commander will try to contact.

Police spokesperson Andre Traut said an investigation was under way, and would not be speculating about a possible outcome.
