Wrecked vehicles piled into each other on Autobahn A31 after a multiple collision caused by thick fog near Heek, northern Germany, 19 November 2011.

In early Saturday morning, five people died in a head-on collision in Aachen. A 24-year-old driver had lost control of his car and had collided with an oncoming car.

Trigger for the disaster on the A 31 between Heek and Gronau-Ochtrup in the direction Emden was a sheet metal damage. Two limousines had collided, nobody was injured.

The standing cars were then the fatal consequences for the following drivers. Whether at least some of them were traveling too fast for the visibility, should find out on Saturday experts. An investigation was initiated for negligent homicide.

Victims were rescued from ambulances and were hit by cars and killed

The dead were a 44-year-old woman from Cologne, a 28-year-old man from Nordhorn and a 50-year-old man from the Borken district.

Two of the victims had escaped after first investigations from their accident wagons and wanted to save themselves to the roadside, but were then captured by cars and fatally injured. The third dead man was found in a cart on a bank. Of the 35 injured, 14 had to be taken to nearby hospitals.Another 50 people who remain physically healthy, must be cared for.

The head-on collision near Aachen, which killed five people at night, was probably caused by driving too fast. A 24-year-old man had lost control of his car and got into oncoming traffic, the police said on Saturday.

The man himself and a 19-year-old and a 22-year-old woman in his car were killed. A 20-year-old rider suffered serious injuries. In the oncoming car, a 47-year-old man and a 45-year-old woman died; a 32-year-old was seriously injured. The accident occurred at 1.20 clock on the highway 258th

down shortly before the collision occurred. Both elderly occupants from the light motor vehicle were outside of it when the bakkie overturned and rolled on top of them.

By the time emergency services arrived on the scene, local towing services already lifted the overturned bakkie from the couple. Sadly, the man was found with fatal injuries and there was nothing that could have been done for him. He was later declared dead on the scene. The woman was treated for multiple injuries and rushed to a nearby hospital.

The driver of the bakkie was treated for moderate injuries and later transported to the hospital.

The exact circumstances surrounding the collision and events leading up to the collision is not yet known. Local authorities attended the scene and will investigate.
