Uitenhage: A suspected hijacker was fatally wounded last night, Tuesday, 13 September 2016, after a high-speed chase ensued and several shots were fired at SAPS officials.

It is alleged that the 34-year-old armed suspect hijacked a TSI VW Polo at about 05:30, yesterday morning in Matana Street, Kwanobuhle and sped off with the vehicle in the direction of Port Elizabeth.

The same TSI VW Polo was later spotted driving in Summerstrand, Port Elizabeth and members from the SAPS PE Flying Squad and the Hijacking Task Team responded and a high-speed chase ensued.

Hijacked Vehicle: TSI VW Polo

The chase continued on the N2 near Kinkelbos, where the suspect allegedly started shooting at police officials. Police members returned fire, fatally wounding the 34-year-old suspect.

Police recovered the hijacked vehicle and a suspected stolen firearm of which the serial number was scratched off.

Investigations by the Hijacking Task Team will determine the number of cases the suspect will be positively linked too.

It was further established that the suspect had previously escaped from the Cradock area during May 2016, after appearing in the Magistrates’ Court on a similar case.

The name of the deceased will be released after his next-of-kin was informed in Johannesburg. The case will also be investigated by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate.
