A man is in a serious condition after a piece of rebar (reinforcing steel used as rods) penetrated his right leg in Howick West earlier today.
It is believed that the man was working in the area when the rebar “shot out” of the machine and went through his leg.
ER24 paramedics arrived on scene and found the man, believed to be about 30 years of age, lying on the ground. The rebar was sticking out of either side of his leg.
The patient was stabilised and ER24’s Rescue Ambulance was called to the scene to assist further.
The man was sedated and rescue technicians used hydraulic cutting equipment to cut the rebar on either side of the man’s leg so that they could put him in the ambulance.
The rescue technicians carefully cut the rebar on either side making sure there was no further injury to the patient.
The patient was closely monitored during this time.
After cutting short the rebar, he was put in the ambulance and transported to hospital under advanced life support care.
