JOHANNESBURG – Convicted murderer Oscar Pistorius has been placed on suicide watch after sustaining severe wrist injuries in jail.
Pistorius was rushed to Pretoria's Kalafong Hospital last weekend but his family insisted it was not a suicide attempt but rather a very bad fall.
The City Press newspaper is reporting that the former paralympian's case has deepened with three senior prison sources confirming that he laid a complaint of attempted murder against prison nurses three weeks ago.
He was sentenced to six years in prison for the 2013 Valentine’s Day murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
The newspaper is reporting that shortly after he returned to Kgosi Mampuru Prison, the convicted murderer made a formal complaint to prison management, alleging three prison nurses were trying to kill him by giving him medication he insisted was "toxic".
The paper says it spoke to a senior correctional services source who says Pistorius refused to take any medication offered by the nurses and insisted on only taking medication prescribed by his private doctor.
He also asked to be transferred to the Zonderwater Prison in the east of Pretoria but his request was denied.
Apparently this was when he was rushed to hospital for wrist injuries but told warders he injured himself by falling off his bed.
But an inmate insists the paralympian intentionally injured himself and prison officials say razor blades were found in his cell during a search last Friday.
