Secunda - Four men were killed and five were arrested following a shoot-out with police in Secunda, Mpumalanga, the Hawks said on Tuesday.
A police officer also died when he and two of his colleagues were involved in an accident during the shoot-out. The two surviving officers were airlifted to hospital.
Members of police units including crime intelligence, the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation Secunda and the provincial task force responded to information received on an attack on a SBV cash in transit vehicle on the Secunda Delmas route, Captain Dineo Sekgotodi said.
At about 17:00 on Monday afternoon a shoot-out with police occurred.
Four men were shot dead and five were arrested.
Sekgotodi said one of the suspects was a former police officer in Secunda. It is alleged that he had been dismissed for attempted robbery.
Police recovered two AK47s, two pistols, one R5 and four motor vehicles.
