Police Officer Attacked and Robbed of Service Pistol at Athlone Voting Station

This morning at around 02:05, a police sergeant stationed at a voting station on the corner of Pliny and Laurence Roads in Athlone was attacked by four armed suspects and robbed of his service pistol.

The member sustained a gunshot wound and was admitted to hospital in a stable condition. The suspects fled the scene in a silver Toyota Avanza and are yet to be arrested.


The second member stationed at the voting station at the time of the attack was not harmed in the incident. Any person who can shed light on the identities of the suspects is kindly requested to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111. All information will be treated confidentially.

Attacks on police are attacks on the State and are not taken lightly.

Western Cape Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula said that SAPS officials on duty will not be deterred from ensuring safety and security and will remain focused on their mandate in spite of ruthless criminals’ activities.

He expressed his best wishes to the sergeant for a speedy recovery.
