According to Charles Bramwell, deputy director of the Eastern Cape traffic department, the driver pulled of the road just before 05h00 to stretch his legs.
A group of men approached the driver and according to the driver, they tried to attack him with pepperspray. It's believed that the driver jumped back into the truck to try and flee from the group of men.
After he failed to flee from the alleged attackers, he jumped out of the truck in attempt to flee from them by foot. It's at this moment that the truck started to move backwards. It's believed that the hand break was down, Bramwell said.
The N2 was closed and motorists had to use alternative routes.
